When you are surrounded by confusion . . .

We are living in odd times. It is difficult to know what is truth. What news outlet can you trust, what statements can you trust, what leader can you trust and who in your personal circle can you trust? Even the weather apps on our phones and devices are consistently wrong every day. It seems that we are living in a time of chaos and confusion.

With all that is going on around us, can we even trust ourselves? Can we trust the emotions we feel? I would offer that it depends on what prompted the emotion. Was it something we read, or saw, or heard about? And if so, what is the source of that information, is it reliable?

It seems that much of the information that is available to read, hear and watch is not true. The search for truth is an age old journey. Pilate, as he was sentencing Jesus to death asked, “What is truth?” In John 18, starting in verse 36 “Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.” 

Jesus was sentenced to death by a man who was confused by the shouting crowd. Whether Pilate believed what the crowd said or felt pressured to go along with them, Pilate’s journey is the same as ours, we are all looking for truth. Truth brings stability, predictability and a sense of peace. The only truth we have available to us is THE Truth, God’s Word, Jesus. Everything else should be treated with skepticism. Jesus even told us the whole reason He was “born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” It is that simple, listen to Jesus.

Let’s pray. Father in heaven, help us to listen to Jesus. Help us to stay focused on You and Your Word alone. Fill us with strength and patience and Your peace. Help us to walk by faith in You and Your Word. Help us to be an example of Your love to everyone we encounter. Lord, help us to grow in You each day. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

We are to be holy, but how?

There are several verses in the Bible that command all children of God to be holy because God is holy. One example is found in Leviticus 11:45 which says, “..you must be holy because I am holy.” The definition of holy is “dedicated or consecrated to God”. In the Old Testament, the Israelites had to consecrate themselves or cleanse the sin to be prepared to encounter a holy God.  

The book of Leviticus contains instructions that were given to the Israelites on what to do and not to do to live a holier life. There are many commands of how to be holy and what to do to avoid defilement. Leviticus 11:46 says, “For I am the Lord your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. So do not defile yourselves . . .”.

The way people become defiled is through sin. As humans, we can never live a life from birth to death that is holy, one that is free from sin. All humans have either had bad thoughts, lied, cheated, stolen or committed some other sin at some point in life. Once we commit a sin, we are no longer holy or set apart, we are defiled.

So how can God command that we be holy, how can we ever successfully obey this command? The answer is simple, belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. In John 17:19, Jesus says. “And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.” It is through the sacrifice of Jesus that we are made holy. There is nothing we can ever do to earn holiness and because we are all imperfect, we cannot be holy by our actions. Once we accept that Jesus died on the cross for us and we accept His holy sacrifice, then we are made holy through Him. Yes, we will still sin as we are humans. But, through Jesus, we are forgiven and made holy each time we approach Him to receive His forgiveness, love and mercy.

Let’s pray. Father in heaven, help us to be holy through Your sacrifice. Fill us with strength and patience and Your peace. Help us to walk by faith in You and Your Word. Help us to trust in Your plan and be an example of Your love to all around us. Lord, help us to grow in You each day. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Sometimes life is hard. There is pain, hurt, betrayal, sickness, suffering, and so many more painful things that we endure each day. The Bible promises us that we will have trials, so do not be surprised. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

When trials become overwhelming, keep your eyes on Jesus. Remember that you are not alone – all of the believers across the entire world are suffering along with you. 1 Peter 5:9 says, “Stand firm against him (the devil), and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”

1 Peter 14:12 says, “Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.”

If the trials become too much to bear, recall the disciples who were sawed in half and crucified upside down because they believed in Jesus. It is unlikely that you are facing such physical tortures, try to keep your trials in perspective. “We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.” 2 Corinthians 1:8-9.

Let’s pray. Father in heaven, help us to overcome our trials by keeping our eyes on Jesus. Fill us with strength and patience and Your peace. Help us to walk by faith in You and Your Word. Help us to trust in Your plan and pray for those who may be causing us trials. Lord, help us to grow in You and stand firm in Your love. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

The Answer to Every Question Is Three Words

Throughout our lives as Christians, we will endure many trials and blessings. Times of blessing are, of course, easy to walk through. The potential hazard during times of blessing is forgetting to thank God. We must recall that He provided all we have, and we should not slip into a sense of self-righteousness or thinking that we provided all we have.

It is during the trials, times of suffering, times of silence, and times of confusion, that we need answers. Depending on what we are walking through, our questions can range from “Why, God?” to “When, God?” to “How, God?”

The enemy will use those times of trial, silence, or confusion to try to get us to doubt God. To doubt His promises, to doubt His past provision, or to doubt that He will once again provide. The enemy knows that when we feel the farthest from God is the exact time that He is the closest and just waiting for us to draw near. James 4:8 says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” The enemy will show up in full force when we are going through hard times.

Job and Joseph are just two examples in the Bible of people under attack but standing firm in their faith for God. Sometimes reading those chapters of the Bible does not help me. I feel like I am not a Job – I could not drop to the ground in worship if God were to wipe out all my children in one swoop, like Job did (Job 1:20). I truly do not think I could do that. Perhaps I could get to that place with time, prayer, and help.

However, in my journey, I have realized that there are three words that we need to insert as the answers to our questions for God. So, in those moments when we feel that the examples in the Bible are not encouraging, and God is silent, and the enemy is attacking, what answers do we have to the questions and hurt swirling in our minds?

I offer three answers, each with three words.

  • “It is well.” No matter what happens to us or our loved ones, our souls will spend eternity with Jesus because we believe He is the Son of God. There are many, many awful things we will endure in this life – but ultimately, our destination is eternity. We need to keep our eyes on eternity, and if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart He rose from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9). Your soul is safe for all eternity, and it is well.
  • “Thy will, Lord.” There are going to be hurtful, hateful, senseless things that happen. On this side of Heaven, we will not always understand why things happen. But we know that He works all things together for the good of those who love him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). We simply cannot understand all that God knows, and it is with this perfect knowledge from generations past and future that He makes the decisions He makes to form His perfect will for us. We will doubt God, we will say this does not make sense, and it will never make sense, and that very well may be true, but we are to “trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding” (Proverb 3:5). Surrendering to His will is what is best for us, whether we can see that now or not.
  • “God loves me.” There will be times of silence. We will feel far from God, or we will be passionately seeking God daily in prayer without an answer for a decade or more. This does not mean He does not hear our prayers. Psalm 116:2 says, “Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” We may receive no response because the timing is not right, or His answer will be different than we seek. However, in those times, we must never doubt His love for us. He sent His one and only Son to die for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). God is our loving Father (Romans 8:15).

Cling to one or all of these answers when the enemy comes for you. Nothing the enemy says is true, for he is the father of all lies. These answers above are Truth. They are promises in the powerful Word of God.

Only God holds your soul (Matthew 10:28), only God is in control of the plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11), and only God has loved you enough to die for you (John 3:16).

Finding Peace in Trials: Welcome to Wounded Butterflies

Wounded Butterflies is focused on how we can navigate the ups and downs of life with a focus on Jesus. Life is tough. Jesus promised us trials (Romans 5:3), but, most importantly, He promised us His peace (Philippians 4:7).

When people share their advice with me, I assess whether they have life experiences and know what they are talking about. I admit, I am impatient with people who have only read about experiences and feel that they are experts.

This site will cover a variety of topics, including how to survive, how to thrive, how to handle God’s resources, and a breadth of spiritual subjects. If you are like me, then, you may want to know what life experiences I have had and whether I am equipped to write about these matters.

I am not a trained writer, nor am I a theological expert. However, I have “street cred,” including being abandoned by my father, growing up dirt poor, being bullied as a child, being sexually assaulted as a teenager, marrying an abusive spouse, being fired, losing people tragically, battling addiction, being betrayed by my spouse, and, unfortunately, much more.

Jesus saved me later in life, and I mention my history not to say, “Look at me! I’ve survived this, that, and the other,” but, rather, as part of my realization that every painful thing I endured is for His glory, to share what He has done to sustain me in the hopes it helps someone else.

Currently, I am a mom of 3 (mostly grown) kids, and I have followed Jesus all over the world for the past 12 years. I am trained professionally in the financial arena, and I will be sharing practical money lessons on how to best steward God’s resources.

I have studied the Bible faithfully every day and have been blessed to teach it for over a decade on several continents. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died for my sins and that life is infinitely better with Him than without Him, and I strive to share that fact with anyone who will listen.

Just like all of us, I am a work in progress. Thank God He does not leave us the way He found us (Philippians 1:6). I am living proof that He can use anyone, regardless of their past.

Father in Heaven,

All that we are and all that we have are Yours. We humbly dedicate this space to bringing You glory and pray that at least one person is drawn closer to You because of its existence.

Thy will be done, Thy kingdom come.
